Japan-based video game music label Brave Wave Studio has finally released Smoke Thief’s electro-ambient compilation, Heart Beat Circuit, which features contributions from heavyweight game composers Manami Matsumae, Saori Kobayashi, and Takahiro Izutani, of Mega Man, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Bayonetta fame
An album five years in the making, Smoke Thief – a.k.a. George Baker – began conceptualising his debut effort after completing his Master’s degree in music performance all the way back in 2010.
The album was apparently inspired by a vision Baker had of a futuristic female android named Krystal who achieves sentience, a life-altering moment that opened up a world of new experiences and give her the opportunity to forge a new life.
The musician hoped to capture Krystal’s awakening by experimenting with a variety of musical styles, blending genres from ambient to jazz, and fusing electronic elements with instruments such as saxophone and piano.
Heart Beat Circuit has been given both a physical and digital release, with those versions retailing for $16 and $10 respectively over on Bandcamp.
